Acacia,
established in May 1982, is a nonprofit organisation which provides child care
services and promotes children's services to Indochinese families in Melbourne
Australia. As a community-based organisation, Acacia has been managed by a committee of management
consisted of parents who placed their child(ren) at the Centre and local community
people. Acacia has two different services: one is the child care centre the
other is the outreach program.
From
the outset, the childcare service had only one childcare centre. In 1999,
Acacia has developed its best management practice by offering the Fitzroy
Creche & Day Nursery an opportunity to be part of the Acacia childcare
service. Currently, the childcare centres are:
- Acacia Children's Centre at 13 Belgium Avenue, Richmond
3121 and
- Acacia Fitzroy Creche at Cnr Napier & Condell
Streets, Fitzroy 3065.
The
child care centres
with qualified, dedicated and experienced staff in early childhood has implemented the
bilingual/bicultural programs which cater for 98 preschool children.
The
outreach services,
is funded by the Commonwealth of Australia, aims to promote and
assist Indochinese families in accessing the children's services and to assist
children's services providers in developing their services and program
culturally appropriate to Indochinese children.
The
Centre aims to:
develop the children's self-esteem and
confidence with their ethnicity.
ensure that the child is assisted to grow up
as a bilingual person.
maintain and develop the children's mother
language and culture background.
support increasing language awareness for the
children.
assist children in understanding that cultural
and linguistic differences are positive differences.
ensure that the Center caters for the
individual needs of the child and his/her family.
To
achieve these objectives, around the year, various activities which reflect the
Indochinese and Australian cultures have been deliberately planned for both
internal and external programs.
